Bhaktapur
Bhaktapur is the best-preserved of the Valley's medieval city-states — a car-light old town of red brick, carved wood and temple squares that feels like stepping back centuries. It suffered in the 2015 earthquake but remains one of Nepal's most atmospheric places.
For the craft. Bhaktapur is a living workshop of Newari artistry — potters, weavers and woodcarvers at work in alleys that haven't changed in 500 years. It is quieter and more cohesive than Kathmandu, and the perfect half-day or overnight trip.
Best time to visit: October to April. Mornings are best for photography before day-trippers arrive.
Getting there: About 13km east of Kathmandu — a 45–60 minute drive, or local bus. Also reachable from Patan via the valley road.
Recommended stay: Half day to one overnight to enjoy the quiet evening and early morning.
There is an entry fee for the heritage area — keep your ticket for re-entry.
Visit early morning for empty squares and soft light.
Many cafés have rooftop views of the temples.
