Chitwan
Chitwan drops you from the Himalayas into the subtropical lowlands of the Terai. Its national park is Nepal's premier wildlife reserve — home to the one-horned rhinoceros, royal Bengal tiger, elephants and over 500 bird species along the Rapti river.
After the thin air of the mountains, Chitwan is a lush, warm contrast. Canoe trips, jungle walks and jeep safaris put you among rhinos and deer, while the Tharu villages offer a culture entirely different from the hills. It is Nepal's most rewarding wildlife experience.
Best time to visit: October to March for dry, comfortable weather and the best wildlife sightings. Monsoon (Jun–Sep) closes many trails and the park is lush but hard to explore.
Getting there: A 20-minute flight to Bharatpur then a short drive, or a 5–6 hour drive from Kathmandu. Tourist buses run daily from Kathmandu and Pokhara.
Recommended stay: 2–3 nights for two safaris and a relaxed pace.
Wear neutral colors and closed shoes for safaris.
Bring binoculars if you have them — birdlife is exceptional.
Park entry and guide fees are required; lodges arrange packages.
