Lumbini
Lumbini is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. Set in the quiet Terai lowlands, the Sacred Garden holds the Maya Devi Temple over the exact spot of his birth, surrounded by monasteries built by Buddhist communities from across the world.
Lumbini is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Buddhist world, yet it remains peaceful and unhurried. Walking the monastic zone — Thai, Burmese, Japanese, Korean and many more — is a journey through how Buddhism is practiced globally. It is a place for stillness.
Best time to visit: October to March for comfortable weather. The full-moon day of Buddha Jayanti (April/May) is the most auspicious visit.
Getting there: A 35-minute flight to Bhairahawa (Gautam Buddha Airport) then a 45-minute drive, or a 7–8 hour drive from Kathmandu.
Recommended stay: 1–2 nights to see the Sacred Garden at dawn and explore the monastic zone.
Visit Maya Devi early morning for peace and light.
Dress modestly — this is an active pilgrimage site.
Bicycles are the best way to cover the monastic zone.
