Mahendranagar (Bhimdatta)
Mahendranagar, officially Bhimdatta, is the main city of Kanchanpur District in Nepal's far west. It is the practical gateway for Shuklaphanta National Park and an important transport and trading center close to the Indian border.
For travelers, Mahendranagar's strength is location. It gives easy access to Shuklaphanta's grasslands while providing hotels, markets, transport and supplies that are harder to find once you move deeper into remote Far West Nepal.
Best time to visit: October to March has the most comfortable temperatures and pairs well with Shuklaphanta wildlife travel. Late spring is very hot; monsoon is humid and wet.
Getting there: Mahendranagar is connected by the east-west highway and is reached overland from Dhangadhi and other western Terai cities. Dhangadhi is the nearest major domestic-air gateway for many travelers.
Recommended stay: 1–2 nights, or 2–3 nights when combined with Shuklaphanta National Park.
