Patan
Patan (Lalitpur), the 'City of Beauty', sits just across the Bagmati River from Kathmandu. It is the Valley's craft capital — a city of hidden courtyards, Buddhist monasteries and the most refined Newari architecture in Nepal.
Patan's Durbar Square is arguably the most beautiful in the Valley, but the real joy is wandering into the courtyards (bahals) where golden Buddha figures hide behind ordinary doorways. It is a city of artists — metalworkers, painters and sculptors still practice here.
Best time to visit: October to April, with mornings the quietest.
Getting there: A 20–30 minute drive or short taxi ride from central Kathmandu across the Bagmati River.
Recommended stay: Half day, or pair with Bhaktapur for a full Valley day.
There is a modest entry fee for Durbar Square.
Hire a local guide for the hidden courtyards — they are easy to miss.
The Patan Museum is a highlight; allow at least an hour.
