Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park
Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park rises directly above the northern edge of Kathmandu Valley, protecting forest, watersheds, wildlife habitat and pilgrimage sites within easy reach of the capital.
It is one of the simplest ways to trade Kathmandu traffic for forest in a single morning. Day hikes lead to viewpoints, monasteries, water sources and ridges, making the park useful both as a standalone nature trip and as a warm-up before a longer Nepal trek.
Best time to visit: October to May gives the most dependable hiking conditions. Monsoon makes the forest lush but trails can be muddy, slippery and leech-heavy.
Getting there: From central Kathmandu, travel by taxi or local vehicle toward gateways such as Budhanilkantha/Muhan Pokhari or Sundarijal, depending on the hike you choose.
Recommended stay: Half a day to one full day; overnight only when connecting to routes such as Chisapani.
Check current park-entry fees and gate hours before setting out.
Carry water, snacks and a light rain layer even on day hikes.
Start early for longer routes and keep enough daylight for the descent.
