Shuklaphanta National Park
Shuklaphanta National Park protects one of Nepal's great western Terai grassland and forest landscapes in Kanchanpur. The park is especially known for swamp deer, broad open phantas, wetlands and a diverse mix of lowland mammals and birds.
Shuklaphanta offers a quieter wildlife experience than Nepal's busiest safari parks. Its open grasslands make wildlife viewing distinctive, while nearby Mahendranagar provides a practical urban base close to the park.
Best time to visit: October to March offers the most comfortable wildlife conditions. April to June becomes very hot, while the monsoon months are wetter and less convenient for park travel.
Getting there: Travel to Dhangadhi by air or road, then continue west toward Mahendranagar/Bhimdatta and the park. Road access from the western Terai is straightforward compared with Far West Nepal's hill destinations.
Recommended stay: 2–3 nights for wildlife drives, birding and a relaxed pace.
Book authorized safari and guide services locally rather than entering wildlife areas independently.
Early morning and late afternoon are generally the most productive wildlife-viewing periods.
