Tourist buses, local buses and what to expect on the road.
Tourist buses on popular routes (Kathmandu–Pokhara, Kathmandu–Chitwan) are reasonably comfortable, with A/C and reserved seats. Book a day ahead in high season through your hotel or an agency.
Local buses go everywhere and cost little, but are crowded, slow and stop frequently. They're an authentic experience but not for the faint-hearted on winding mountain roads.
Night buses exist on some long routes but are not recommended for safety and comfort. Travel in daylight where possible, especially on mountain roads prone to landslides in monsoon.
Microbuses and jeeps fill in the gaps where larger buses can't reach. Agree fares in advance and expect to wait until the vehicle fills up.
