How to travel respectfully in a deeply religious country.
Nepal is predominantly Hindu and Buddhist, and religion is woven into daily life. Dress modestly, especially at temples — shoulders and knees covered. Remove shoes before entering shrines and homes.
Ask before photographing people, ceremonies or the inside of temples. Some sites prohibit photography entirely. Never point the soles of your feet at a person or religious object.
Use your right hand (or both hands) for giving and receiving — the left hand is considered unclean. A gentle namaste with palms together is a warm, respectful greeting.
Public displays of affection are uncommon and best avoided. Be patient and calm — raising your voice is considered very poor form. A little effort with 'namaste' and 'dhanyabad' (thank you) goes a long way.
