Packing for Nepal
What to bring for cities, trekking and everything between.
Pack in layers. For trekking: a base layer, a warm mid-layer (fleece), a down jacket, and a waterproof shell. Broken-in trekking boots are the most important item you'll bring — don't arrive with new shoes.
Essentials include a sleeping bag (rated to the coldest night you'll face), headlamp, water purification, a basic first-aid kit, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, SPF), and a power bank. Trekking poles save your knees on long descents.
For cities and the Terai, light breathable clothing and modest temple attire. For winter and high treks, serious cold-weather gear. A duffel for porters and a small daypack for yourself is the standard trekking setup.
Less is more — you can buy or rent much of your trekking gear in Kathmandu or Pokhara. Carry what's essential and hard to replace (passport, insurance, medications, broken-in boots) from home.
