How to travel in Nepal in a way that gives back.
Nepal's environment and culture are its greatest assets — and both are under pressure from tourism. Travel lightly: carry a reusable bottle and purify water, refuse single-use plastic, and carry out all waste, especially on trek.
Support local economies. Stay in family-run teahouses and homestays, eat local food, hire local guides and porters, and buy crafts directly from makers. Fair pay and tips for porters and guides matter.
Respect culture. Dress modestly, ask before photographing, and follow local norms at religious sites. Avoid elephant riding and choose ethical wildlife experiences. Never buy antiquities or items made from endangered species.
Give thoughtfully. Donating to community projects or reputable organizations is far more effective than giving sweets or pens to children, which can encourage begging. Leave Nepal as beautiful as you found it.
