Use the same practical precautions you would in other travel destinations: secure valuables, use registered tourism services, keep copies of important documents and avoid isolated areas when you do not know the surroundings.
For trekking and mountain travel, the most consequential risks are often environmental and logistical — altitude illness, weather, trail conditions, road disruption and delayed flights. Build buffer time into your plan and follow current local advice.
Nepal Tourism Board's Tourist Police guidance recommends using government-registered travel and trekking agencies, authorized tourist vehicles and authorized foreign-exchange services.
Save official emergency contacts before travel. Nepal Tourism Board currently lists 1144 for the Tourist Police toll-free hotline, 100 for Police Assistance and 103 for Traffic Police Assistance. Also keep your embassy and travel-insurance emergency contacts available offline.
