Staying connected — getting a local SIM and what to expect for coverage.
A local SIM is the easiest way to stay connected. NTC (Nepal Telecom) and Ncell are the main providers; both sell tourist SIMs at the airport and city shops with your passport and a photo.
Data is affordable and coverage is good in cities and most trekking regions up to mid-altitude. NTC generally has the best high-altitude coverage (including much of the Everest region). Expect limited or no data in remote valleys and high camps.
Wi-Fi is available in many city hotels and teahouses, though it can be slow or paid per device on popular trekking routes. Many lodges offer charging for a small fee.
Download offline maps (maps.me, Gaia, or similar) and key documents before you leave connectivity behind. A power bank is essential on longer treks.
