Nepal Travel Cost: Daily Budgets & a 7-Day Example

A practical budget for Kathmandu and Pokhara, with daily allowances, a seven-day example for two people, and the extra costs to check before you book.
Start with your route and travel style. For a simple Kathmandu-and-Pokhara trip, NEPAGO suggests an initial daily allowance of USD 30–45 per person on a budget, or USD 55–85 with more comfort. These are planning estimates for a share of a room, meals and ordinary local travel—not live package prices.
Add intercity transport, paid sightseeing, visas where applicable, insurance and international flights separately. A trek, safari package, private vehicle or domestic flight needs its own quote. All dollar amounts below are US dollars; supplier prices in Nepali rupees (NPR) remain in their original currency.
How much should you budget per day?
These per-person estimates assume two adults sharing a room in Kathmandu or Pokhara. They are starting allowances, not a survey average or a promise that rooms will be available at that price. Solo travelers paying for a private room should allow more.

Not included: flights, intercity buses, visas, insurance, attraction entry, trekking, guides, adventure activities, shopping or a contingency fund. Breakfast included in your room can reduce the separate food allowance.
Seven days in Nepal: a sample budget for two
This worked example covers two adults, seven days and six nights, sharing one simple private room. It assumes Kathmandu and Pokhara, tourist buses in both directions, modest meals and a limited sightseeing allowance. Replace each allowance with your actual quotes before booking.

USD 820 is an illustrative budget, not a bookable offer. International flights, travel insurance, domestic flights, trekking, guides, safari packages, major adventure activities, alcohol and shopping are excluded. Visa costs depend on nationality, eligibility and stay length. Confirm taxes and breakfast in the final room price; if actual quotes are higher, increase the budget.
A possible pace is two nights in Kathmandu, three in Pokhara and a final night in Kathmandu before departure. Travel days take a substantial part of the week. Keep an extra night or more if your onward connection needs a larger delay buffer; any additional night is outside this six-night example.

The USD 35 room and USD 20 bus figures in our worked example are editorial allowances, not quotes from the suppliers above. The hotel example shows why a room quote can exceed the allowance. We have not converted NPR prices at a fixed exchange rate.
Costs that can change the total
Accommodation: compare the final cost for your dates, number of guests and meal plan. Check whether tax, breakfast, airport pickup and cancellation are included. A displayed starting price is not a confirmed reservation.
Transport: get separate quotes for domestic flights, private cars and jeeps. Check baggage allowances and transfer costs. Keep money and time available for disrupted journeys rather than relying on a same-day road or mountain-flight connection to your international flight.
Trekking: the city budget above does not cover a trek. Price permits, guide and porter services, trailhead transport, equipment, accommodation, food, drinking water, charging and showers separately. Check route-specific requirements and appropriate insurance before committing.
Sightseeing and activities: entry fees can differ by nationality and location. The sample USD 80 for two is an allowance, not unlimited entry. Make a shortlist and total the actual fees; add separate quotes for safaris, paragliding or guided tours.
Money and connectivity: account for ATM, card and currency-exchange charges, plus a SIM or compatible eSIM. Keep access to cash for places where cards are not accepted.
Spend less without rushing the trip
Choose fewer bases and stay longer in each. Compare a room's full price and included breakfast before choosing the lowest headline rate. Mix local meals with more expensive cafés, and group nearby sights to reduce repeat taxi journeys.
Use the seven-day itinerary as a starting point, then build your own plan. Keep the contingency separate from everyday spending. A lower daily allowance only helps if the route, transport and activities also fit it.

It can be a starting allowance for a budget city trip when two people share a low-cost room and keep meals and local transport modest. It is not an all-in daily price: add intercity travel, visas where applicable, paid sights, insurance, flights and a contingency. Check actual quotes before relying on it.
How much does one week in Nepal cost for two people?
NEPAGO's worked example is USD 820 for two adults over seven days and six nights, including an approximately 15% contingency. It uses specified allowances for a shared room, meals, buses, local travel, limited sightseeing, data and two standard paid 15-day visas. Flights, insurance, trekking and major activities are excluded; it is not a package offer.
Does this budget include Everest Base Camp, Rara or Tilicho?
No. It is a Kathmandu-and-Pokhara city-trip example. Everest Base Camp, Rara and Tilicho need separate route planning and cost estimates for transport, walking days, permits and local support as applicable.
