Things to Do in Nepal
The best ways to experience Nepal — heritage, Himalayan views, wildlife, food, trekking and local culture.
Nepal is much more than a trekking destination. A first trip can combine UNESCO-listed heritage in the Kathmandu Valley, Himalayan views around Pokhara, wildlife in the Terai, Buddhist and Hindu pilgrimage sites, local food, village stays and outdoor adventure.
In Kathmandu Valley, build time around Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur rather than treating the capital as only an arrival point. Historic squares, temples, stupas, courtyards and Newari neighborhoods make the valley one of Nepal's richest cultural areas.
Pokhara is the easiest base for lake views, sunrise viewpoints, paragliding and access to the Annapurna region. Chitwan is the classic wildlife stop, while Lumbini adds a very different experience centered on Buddhist heritage and pilgrimage.
For mountain travel, choose an experience that matches your time and fitness. That might mean a short hill walk, a multi-day trek such as Ghorepani–Poon Hill or Mardi Himal, or a longer route such as Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Langtang Valley or the Annapurna Circuit.
Leave room for simple experiences too: eating dal bhat and momos, browsing local markets, drinking tea with mountain views, visiting family-run guesthouses and spending unhurried time in neighborhoods rather than moving every day.
