Distances in Nepal can look short on a map but take much longer on the ground. Mountain roads are winding, roadworks and landslides can slow journeys, and weather can affect both roads and flights. Plan by realistic travel time rather than distance alone.
Domestic flights are useful when time matters or when a trailhead is difficult to reach by road. Kathmandu links with destinations including Pokhara, Bharatpur, Bhairahawa, Lukla and Jomsom, but weather can delay or cancel mountain flights. Keep buffer time around connections.
Tourist buses are a practical choice on major visitor routes such as Kathmandu–Pokhara and Kathmandu–Chitwan. Local buses and microbuses reach many more places for less money but generally take longer, make more stops and offer less space.
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are useful inside Kathmandu and Pokhara. For day trips, remote trailheads or routes with several stops, a private car or jeep can be easier than piecing together local transport, although it costs more.
